God’s providence extends not only over angels but also over men. In this realm we may speak of His providence in the general population and then over His own elect people in particular.

As all men have their life and breath and all things from God, they live and move and have their being in Him [i].  He gazes down from above with great attention in order to provide for us and preserve us. “The LORD looks from heaven; He sees all the sons of men. From His dwelling place He looks out on all the inhabitants of the earth. He Who fashions the hearts of them all, He Who understands all their works [ii].”  Even God’s righteous judgment cares for mankind: “Your righteousness is like the mountains of God. Your judgments are like a great deep. O LORD, You preserve man and beast [iii].”  The providence of God is concerned in the production of every man into every stage and step of life, even unto death.

This providence is concerned first of all with the production of man into being. It was the will of God, declared from the beginning, that there should be a propagation of the human race. God made man male and female for that specific purpose. He joined them together in marriage and enjoined them with the first law of nature: increasing and multiplying.

To be more specific, the providence of God is concerned with the birth of every man with respect to the time, the place, and the person who is born.  Each of these is fixed in the purposes of God; the providence of God exactly executes those purposes. “There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven — a time to give birth and a time to die [iv] … He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation [v] … Joseph said to his father, ‘They are my sons, whom God has given me’ …[vi] .“  The conception of man in the womb, the formation of every organ in the body in the wonderfully skillful manner in which they were made are all under the direction and providence of God. Scripture states, “Your hands fashioned and made me altogether, and would You destroy me? Remember now, that You have made me as clay; and would You turn me into dust again? [vii] …He who planted the ear, does He not hear? He who formed the eye, does He not see? [viii] … For You formed my inward parts. You wove me in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to You for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret and skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth. Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; and in Your book were all written the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them [ix].”
