The Jehovah’s Witnesses who stopped by my home gave me one of their songbooks. It’s called Sing Praises to Jehovah. I’ve always wanted to learn about their songs. Do they sing to the Lord Jesus as the true Christians do? This article highlights the specific songs which mention Jesus Christ. There are 225 songs in all; this is part one of a series.
Note: the JWs think of themselves as “Christians” in their songs, but it is my experience that they do not typically call themselves by this name when they are preaching door-to-door.
Hymn #3 – Gaining Victory Over the World (Based John 16:33)
This is a song about enduring the nations’ hatred. The Jehovah’s Witnesses must march on undeterred. “’Take courage!” said Christ Jesus, “I will keep you in my care.’” Through faith in Christ the Lord the Jehovah’s Witnesses are victorious over the world.
Hymn #4 – God’s Promise of Paradise (Based on Luke 23:43)
By means of Christ’s millennial reign God has promised the Jehovah’s Witness a paradise. Jesus will “blot out” all sin and remove death, tears, and pain. Jesus will cause “billions of dead” to rise. Christ will fulfill the promises He has made, for He delights in doing God’s will.
Hymn #7 – The Hope of Mankind’s Jubilee (Based on Leviticus 25:10)
This hymn has four stanzas and no refrain or chorus. The tune concerns itself with the fall of creation, whose plight seems hopeless. Christ will usher in a jubilee by God’s decree. Jehovah’s people will eventually have their prayers answered.
Hymn #8- Loyally Submitting to Theocratic Order (Based on 1 Corinthians 14:33)
“Theocratic order they must obey” is the command in the opening line. “…Jesus Christ, the Leader, is in full control. Jesus equips the soldiers he does enroll….” The song encourages Jehovah’s Witnesses to knit together to combat spiritual warfare.
Hymn #12 – God Loves a Cheerful Giver (Based on 2 Corinthians 9:7)
“As a Giver, he’s matchless; e’en his Son for us he gave.”
Sometimes Arian opinions can appear scriptural; however this does not prevent misinterpretation, and that is precisely what the Arians intend – E. Calvin Beisner on the Trinitarian controversy, God In Three Persons.
Hymn #13 – Christian Dedication (Exodus 39:30)
“In water Jesus was baptized to righteousness fulfill, And humbly he did there present Himself to do God’s will. When he came up from the Jordan as God’s anointed Son, Obedient and loyal he would serve as God’s consecrated One.”
Hymn #14- Be Glad, You Nations! (Based on Romans 15:10)
Christ Jesus reigns on Mount Zion. The times of the Gentiles have ended. Their kings have had their day. This system is on the brink of Armageddon’s coming battle. Men Praise their disgusting image and spurn the Prince of Peace. It’s nearer than you think.
Hymn #15 – Life Without End – At Last! (Based on John 3:16)
This hymn’s claim is that it is based on the most famous verse in the Bible. But, sadly, it does not speak of the cross (“tree” in JW lingo) or God’s love for the world by sending His Son to die in man’s place.
Hymn #17 – Jehovah’s “Dewdrops” Among Many Peoples (Based on Psalm 110:3)
“Beauteous like the dew at morning is the remnant of Christ’s bride” is the opening line. God’s true servants (the JW’s of course) are gentle and refreshing, and with all men they pursue peace and proclamation of God’s Kingdom.
Hymn #18 – Bless Our Kingdom Brotherhood (Based on 1 Peter 2:17)
With kindness and patience, Christ Jesus taught. Christ showed real brotherhood with righteousness. He set patterns of humility, and of love and faithfulness. When Christians are the happiest is when they are listening to God’s Word. Disciples of Christ are known for their brotherhood. Jehovah’s Witnesses should take the Kingdom news to all those who love truth.
Hymn #21 Hail Jehovah’s Kingdom! (Based on Revelation 11:17)
Christians are encourage to come to God’s Kingdom established by His Son. Once Satan (the devil and dragon serpent) is bound, then Christ will make God’s praises everywhere on the earth. The faithful flock will praise Jehovah’s Kingdom, which they’ll share with Christ. Note that Christ is called “The Rock” in this hymn.
Hymn #22 – Heeding Jude’s Message (Based on Jude 21)
This hymn states that the Book of Jude was written so Jehovah’s Witnesses may never fall. The Book has clear warnings as to what is wrong. The last verse reads “…To Jehovah God, our Savior, Thru Christ Jesus, who’s our Lord, Let us honor give with one accord…”
Hymn #24 No Part of the World (Based on John 17:16)
God set the Jehovah’s Witnesses apart from the rest of the world. JWs want no part of this satanic world. They choose to be like Christ, the Lord. JWs expect persecution, but God, through Christ, will protect them.
Hymn #27 – Fear Them Not! (Based on Matthew 10:28)
Jehovah’s Witnesses are encouraged to move forward with preaching their Kingdom message and not fear their enemies. All lovers of truth know that God’s reigning Son, Jesus Christ, will soon bind the foes of the Watchtower Society. He will bind the devil, Satan.
Hymn #29 – Forward, You Witnesses! (Based on Luke 16:16)
God’s servants should be determined and firm. God’s New Order is near! The Name of Jehovah is banned by wicked people and it must be restored by “Christians.”
Hymn #30 – Zealous for Fine Works (Based on Titus 2:14)
Jehovah’s Witnesses should be enthusiastic for good works. Jehovah’s Witnesses should be sincere about serving their Christian brothers since “the face of Armageddon is near.”
Hymn #31 – Zeal for Jehovah’s House (Based on John 2:17)
Jesus Christ showed a fiery zeal for Jehovah’s house, and so should Jehovah’s Witnesses. Jesus laid bare all wrong-doing. Jesus came to preach salvation. The apostles and disciples of Jesus had a zeal for fine works, too. Congregations grew with help of [a] holy spirit.
Hymn #32 – From House to House (Based on Acts 20:20)
From house to house, from door to door, from farm to farm Jehovah’s sheep are fed. As Jesus Christ foretold, the good news that God’s Kingdom rules is being preached throughout the earth by Christians young and old.
Hymn #33 – Jehovah Himself Has Become King (Based on Psalm 97:1)
People should give thanks to Jehovah. Jehovah’s Witnesses should give Jehovah thanks for his Son, Jesus Christ the King. Do the JWs realize that the title implies that Jesus the King is indeed Jehovah God? Or are there two Kings ruling at the same time?
Hymn #34 – Living Up to Our Name (Based on Isaiah 43:10-12)
In this song the JWs ask God to help them honor His name by clearly following in Christ Jesus’s footsteps.
What damned error,
But sober brow
Will bless and approve
It with a text,
Hiding the grossness
with fair ornament?
Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice.

Jehovah’s Witnesses are advancing and bending every power that gets in their way. Jesus is their Commander and He takes offensive. Jehovah’s Witnesses should join Him in the fight.
Hymn #42 – This Is the Way (Based on Isaiah 30:20, 21)
God’s voice calls on the Jehovah’s Witnesses to “walk in the way.” It is the way Jehovah has shown them in this day. God’s spirit will help Jehovah’s Witnesses to walk the straight path. The JW’s “eyes of faith” see the true peace, for Christ rules the Kingdom. JWs should not turn left or right, but walk in God’s way so that advancements are made.
Hymn #44 – Jehovah Really Cares (Based on 1 Peter 5:7)
God knows the numbers on a man’s head. Why should Jehovah’s Witnesses worry? Various kinds of afflictions will come upon Christians, but Jehovah will provide for His people.
Hymn #45 – A Prayer of Thanksgiving (Based on Psalm 65)
Jehovah God deserves praise! The blood of Jehovah’s Son bought His people. Now their desire should be to be instructed. When God’s Kingdom appears sickness, death, tears and sorrow will be wiped out. God’s Son will wipe away all wickedness.
Hymn #47 – Jehovah, Our Strength and Our Might (Based on Isaiah 12:2)
Jehovah is our strength and might. Jehovah is our Savior. Jehovah is our Rock. Jehovah is our Tower. Through Jesus Christ, God’s Son, we now seek joy and peace.
Hymn #50 – Responding to God’s Love (Based on 1 John 4:11)

To be continue …
